Amanda the Adventurer (2024)

This article is about the 2023 game. For other uses, see Amanda the Adventurer (disambiguation).

Amanda the Adventurer is a 2023 indie horror game developed by MANGLEDmaw Games and published by DreadXP. The player controls Riley Park who inherits their Aunt Kate's house following her passing. Riley finds and watches VHS tapes containing episodes of an early 2000s children's cartoon, Amanda the Adventurer. Riley can guide the show's protagonist Amanda, and her sheep companion Wooly by responding to their questions and choosing objects in the show. As Riley watches more tapes, they uncover Amanda's sinister yet distressed nature, and the dark backstory of the cartoon's development.

Following the reception of the original Amanda the Adventurer made for a 2022 game jam, MANGLEDmaw would partner with DreadXP to develop a full-fledged version with a new narrative. Amanda the Adventurer was released on Steam on April 25, 2023, and on the Nintendo Switch on September 19, 2023, with future ports to consoles, Android, and iOS.[2] A sequel, Amanda the Adventurer 2, will be released in 2024.

Plot[]

Riley Park receives a vague goodbye letter from their Aunt Kate, explaining that she's almost out of time and bequeathing her house to Riley in Kensdale, Ohio. She leaves behind a VHS tape, warning Riley there's no going back when they watch it. Riley moves into the house and finds the tape in the attic next to a TV. It contains an episode of Amanda the Adventurer, "In the Kitchen", which involves Amanda and Wooly baking a pie. Riley can give answers and choose objects in the show to answer Amanda's questions, but if they keep answering incorrectly, Amanda forces them to say the correct answer or makes the other objects disappear.

Using hints given in the episodes, Riley solves the puzzles of various objects in the attic, finding more tapes. "In Your Neighborhood" has Amanda buy a card and cookies to send to her friend, who is revealed to be Riley's aunt. "Oh No! Accidents!" has Amanda break Wooly's knee after attempting to warn Riley, resulting in him being taken to the hospital. In "Everything Rots!", Amanda finds a rotting sandwich, tree stump, and fox, before revealing that she sometimes feels herself rotting. Amanda asks Riley if they think that "everything rots", but regardless of their answer, Amanda expresses sorrow. The TV's screen fades to static, followed by a tall gray creature breaking into the attic and killing Riley.

In a different path, Riley makes the oven combust in "In the Kitchen", leading to the discovery of an alternate "In Your Neighborhood", where Wooly helps a confused Amanda by having her get a card for his birthday. Riley then watches "What's a Family?", where Amanda and Wooly visit a petting zoo. Wooly starts behaving like an actual sheep, and Amanda discovers a sad, lonely kitten. If Riley chooses not to help the kitten, Amanda starts sobbing and turning into the gray creature, causing it to break in and kill Riley.

In the true path, Riley uses other hints to discover secret tapes, which reveal the story of show creator Sam Colton, his adopted daughter Rebecca, and the company that purchased the show, Hameln Entertainment. Riley uses a toy named Blabbot to find the alternate "Oh No! Accidents!", where Amanda claims Wooly's head is broken. To operate on his brain, Amanda uses a saw on him, with Wooly's presumable death obscured by static.

In the final tape, "We Can Share", Amanda asks if she can share a secret with Riley. Upon accepting, Amanda reveals that she's "out there. Somewhere..." The TV's visuals and sounds become a distorted mess, forcing Riley to throw a brick to destroy it. Afterward, Riley sees a masked figure has entered the attic.

Ports[]

Amanda the Adventurer was released on the Nintendo Switch on September 19, 2023. While the gameplay remains mostly unchanged, a key difference is being unable to type answers, instead choosing one of four given answer prompts.

In May 2024, the developers announced Amanda the Adventurer would be coming to consoles, Android, and iOS.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The game is a spoof of the children's show Dora the Explorer. The logo and its font also have similarities.
  • A rewind button for the TV was cut due to possible problems with its functionality.[3]
  • The Steam description says Riley finds "a stack of VHS tapes next to an old TV set." In-game, there is only one tape found there, which is "In the Kitchen".
