Blooket - Class 11 Post

-April 05, 2024

This week I decided to review Blooket. I have heard of it before, and in fact, another teacher on my team uses it but I have never looked into it or used it myself. Blooket is an online, engaging assessment tool for students. Educators can create an account for free and then create 'sets'. These sets are similar to what you might see on Quizlet. In fact, one of the reviews I watched involved the educator just importing already created Quizlet sets. Once you create a 'set' you select the host button and then you can choose the game mode. This is where the engagement comes in for students. It looks like there are several choices for the free account. Once the educator has chosen a game mode, they host the game, and a code is generated for students to join the game. This should be hosted on a board large enough for all the students to see. Students will need their own devices to play. As students participate, they will be answering whatever questions have been created by the educator and collecting points in whatever way the game mode allows. Once the game is over, the educator can then review and analyze the results, allowing them to quickly see areas where their students might need more support. Aside from this game portion of Blooket, it seems to have other features as well. Educators can assign homework and even search sets that other teachers have created and use them for their own classes.

This resource seems to have a lot of pros, such as being user-friendly and engaging for students. I like the ability to switch up the game modes so students don't get bored with the same 'rewards' every time it is used. Another pro is being able to search for sets that other educators have already created. I think this would be nice to see how others have done it if you are stuck on creating one. Another pro is that you can set a time limit for how long the game can be played before there is a winner, however, it cannot exceed 10 minutes. This definitely keeps students engaged. Another pro for this resource is that the questions can also have a time limit ranging from 5 seconds to 4 minutes. I think this allows for students who might take longer to process to still be a part of the game.

Although there are many pros for this resource, I believe there are also some cons. One is if each student does not have their own device they would have to play with another person or even a small group. This could be great in some situations, but if each student is not able to play individually I think it does lack student motivation and willingness to want to participate. I also think this game is meant for older students. This game would be hard to play if there are students unable to read at grade level, but especially kids that are far below grade level because I think it would be hard for the teacher to read every single question and option aloud, especially if the question timer is only a few seconds.

Overall I would give this resource a 4-star rating. I will definitely be trying this out with my students!

Hey Corryn! I LOVE Blooket! Like so much! My class from last year would get way too competitive so we had to stop playing Kahoot to review for assessments 😅 Blooket is great because it's more private-- students don't see how they're ranked until the very end! I also like that it is very individual, so you can walk around and help as needed. I would say, if you've never used it before, make sure to test out the different games so you can explain them to the class. Blooket doesn't do a good job of explaining the minigames, and that has also caused meltdowns.

Corryn, I just read another post about Blooket and it sounds like such an engaging resource. Kids love a little competition (within reason obviously). Teaching littles I don't have as many opportunities to use technology like this. I will definitely recommend this to our intermediate teachers if I hear of anyone looking for a new resource! Thanks for sharing!

    Corryn,
Blooket is an extremely popular tech for the reasons you mention--students find it engaging and the variety of games. In fact, Blooket was created by a high school student tired of playing Kahoot. I think a lot of student would like it because it, like Minecraft, allows them to steal other students' coins. Great post!

Triple E Framework

-March 09, 2024

In this blog post, I will be assessing a current lesson where students used technology to research a topic and prepare to write an opinion essay, using the Triple E Framework. Engagement in Learning The first subtopic in the engagement of learning focuses on students' ability to focus on the task with little distraction. In this lesson, my rating would be two (yes) because I chose the websites they could access where I knew there would be no ads or pop-ups. It would only be focused on their topic. One website we use is PebbleGo Next. The second subtopic is about motivating students to start the learning process. For this less, I think it was somewhat motivating. It definitely allowed them to read about their topic, but some were so interested in learning about the topic instead of analyzing the information to gather facts to support their opinion. The final subtopic of this category is about students becoming more social learners. For this lesson, I would say no. Although we were a

Week 3 Blog Post

-January 27, 2024

This week I read about Explore Boards from Matt Miller. The goal of an explore board is to personalize learning for all students. “An Explore Board is a document packed full of resources about whatever you’re studying. These resources show the nuance and variety of what you’re learning…showing that there are many, many sides to the topic.” (Miller, 2023). When students use these they are still able to explore and learn about the topic you have assigned but they are able to have a choice about how they build their background knowledge. The cool thing about these Explore Boards is that sources from all different types of media can be included. In his blog post, he went through the basics of an explore board, what they look like (examples were included), how they can be used in the classroom, and how to create them (with a template link included). I am eager to try these out with my students and see what I can create using the template provided in the blog post. If you are curious ch
