This traditional creamy coleslaw is a classic, it’s actually the copycat Chick-fil-A creamy coleslaw recipe. Actually not a copycat at all, it’s the actual coleslaw recipe given out by Chick-fil-A themselves.
There are so many different flavors and ways to make coleslaw. This variation is for traditional creamy coleslaw, the kind that has just a touch of sweetness, a little tang and dripping with creamy goodness.
When Chick-fil-A removed their famous Chick-fil-A creamy coleslaw from the menu, they decided to provide the recipe for all to enjoy. There was such a backlash regarding the removal of this coleslaw from the Chick-fil-A menu that some restaurants have added it back. But at least Chick-fil-A gave us the next best thing, a way to make their famous Chick-fil-A creamy coleslaw at home.
This creamy coleslaw is soooooo easy to make you won’t waste spending money on the expensive store bought premade slaw again. Hey, it takes 5 minutes to whip this creamy coleslaw up, a lot faster than running to the store.
Bagged Coleslaw Vs Freshly Shredded Coleslaw
You’ll have some purists that insist on shredding their own cabbage and carrots. I’ll admit, it does make for a crunchier coleslaw. But I’m more for convenience and ease and really think the bagged coleslaw is perfect. You can buy the shredded kind or the diced Southern style. The diced Southern style coleslaw mix actually gives back that crunch versus buying the shredded kind and I’ll opt for that if I can find it. Try to find a bagged coleslaw mix with carrots for color and taste, some even have red cabbage in them that adds even more color.
You’ll find bagged coleslaw mix with all of the bagged salad kits in the produce section.
Make Ahead Steps For Creamy Coleslaw
Coleslaw will last for 3 days in the refrigerator. BUT, coleslaw will lose its crunch and get a little watery the longer it’s stored. If you are going to make the creamy coleslaw any earlier than 6 hours before serving, then make the dressing and hold the dressing in its own container in the refrigerator until ready to use. Then when you are ready to serve the coleslaw you just need to cut open your bagged cabbage/carrot mix and toss with the dressing. It’s best to mix and refrigerate the creamy coleslaw 2 hours ahead of time to help meld the flavors. But I’ve served it plenty of times just after mixing, so no worries if you don’t have those extra two hours.
Finding Chick-fil-A Creamy Coleslaw in Stores
I’ve heard that some of the Chick-fil-A stores have started carrying the creamy coleslaw again, but I haven’t visited one myself. Let me know if anyone finds a store still selling it. In the meantime, enjoy making the slaw at home.

Ingredients
- 4teaspoonsvinegarI use cider vinegar but white will work
- 1/4CupSugar
- 3/4teaspoonDry mustard
- 1/4teaspoonKosher salt
- 1CupMayonnaise
- 16Ounces Diced Southern style coleslaw with carrotsChick-fil-A calls for 20 ounces of finely shredded coleslaw
Instructions
Mix everything but the bagged coleslaw mix and mayonnaise together until the sugar dissolves. Then add the mayonnaise. Finally add the bagged coleslaw mix with carrots to combine.
If you have 2 hours then cover and refrigerate to let the flavors meld. But I've served it right away and it still tastes great!
Recipe Notes
The actual Chick-fil-A creamy coleslaw recipe calls for 20 ounces finely shredded cabbage and add 1/4 cup chopped carrots. I like buying the diced Southern style coleslaw mix because it gives a crunchier slaw and already has the carrots in the mix.

Do you think the type of Mayo you use makes a difference? I am sure it does. We tried it from the actual Chick Fil A printed recipe And to me it tasted nothing like it. I am excited to to try yours and hoping for a better result!
