I was introduced to Bulletproof Coffee when I started a Keto eating journey with my family in 2019. Fast forward to 2024, I am no longer following a keto diet but still enjoy bulletproof coffee!

​I started learning about "keto coffee" on my keto journey and was immediately open to trying it because of the many health and brain benefits.

What is Bulletproof coffee anyway?

In a nutshell, it is a high fat, low-carb creamy, frothy coffee drink made with butter and oil.The fact that bulletproof coffee has so many health benefits is a huge bonus and another reason it is part of my everyday morning routine even when I am not eating keto (like now! in 2024!).

As a coffee lover, I am always interested in different types of coffee, especially DIY recipes I can easily make at home. The creamier the better and in the creamy category Bulletproof coffee delivers!

But really, what is all the rage, right? Why is Bulletproof coffee so great anyway?

This easy DIY coffee recipe that is meant to replace your breakfast meal and can be made with things you already have at home and in addition to being creamy and delicious has some extra perks.

Bulletproof coffee benefits include:

  • Increase inmental clarity
  • Promote energy/alertness
  • Curbscravings thus promoting weight loss
  • Speeds up metabolism

Need I say more?

I love the fact that coffee is good for you. It is one of my favorite drinks and not one I plan to eliminate as I age. Although I have reached the point in life where watching what time of day I stop drinking caffeinated drinks is important (hello, midlife, if you aren’t there yet, you will be one day!).

Sadly (for me!), it is possible to drink too much coffee, counteracting its health benefits. Not surprisingly, adding things to your coffee can also make it unhealthy.

To keep your coffee intake healthy, here are a few tips from Bulletproof.com:

“Research supports the idea that coffee is awesome. But there are two important caveats to keep in mind:

1. Don’t overdo it. Up to 400mg of caffeine, a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults, according to the Mayo Clinic. That’s about four cups of brewed coffee.

2.Be aware of what you’re adding to your cup. Most scientific studies are examining caffeine or plain coffee, not pumpkin spice lattes. Keep reading to learn what you should limit — and what coffee add-ins to enjoy instead.”

An easy bullet proof coffee is a great option to add to your meal plans if you are a coffee drinker and you are on keto. I personally am no longer eating a strictly keto diet but still enjoy bullet proof coffee (also called butter coffee). I want to enjoy the increased mental clarity, energy and metabolism boost!

Side note: If you are counting calories and need to stay within a calorie deficit to lose weight, making bulletproof coffee does require high-fat and caloric ingredients, so you will spend some of your daily calories with this coffee. While coffee beans (or coffee) is zero calories grass fed butter or grass fed ghee and coconut oil add up quickly even when using a couple table spoons.

Whenever I start anything new in my life I like to try it for free before I make any investment.

This is why, at first, it was important for me to be able to make this coffee recipe without purchasing a single thing. Mission accomplished!

I started with this easy bulletproof coffee recipe.

  • Black coffee
  • Butter (grass fed is best and recommended but honestly I use what I have)
  • Oil - regular old coconut oil.
  • Stevia Sweetener & a dash of cinnamon on top (look at that yummy foamy cream!)

You do need some type of blending device. This coffee needs to be blended or the oil will remain separated. You can use any type of blending device. A regular blender, hand blender, milk frother or my new favoritemagic bullet blender.

A frequent question about mixing bulletproof coffee is"how can I mix coconut oil into my coffee without a blender?"
You can do this with a blender bottle. One of those plastic bottles with the little metal whisk ball inside for mixing shakes (commonly seen at gyms or sold with protein powders). I have not tried this but if you don't own any type of blender and you have one of these go for it!

If you don’t have coconut oil, you can skip it and use butter only.
The Bulletproof coffee recipe we are familiar with today originated from a Tibetan butter tea.

Dave Asprey was inspired by a creamy tea made with yak butter. He was given this tea by a woman in the Tibetan mountains, felt the mental clarity after drinking it, and crafted a coffee recipe based on this experience.

Bulletproof coffee is commonly referred to as butter coffee or keto butter coffee. Butter is really the key ingredient. The coconut oil adds healthy fats and a long list of health benefits. Grass-fed butter is the healthiest option but I use whatever butter I have on hand (real butter though, not margarine).

Ghee (clarified butter) is also a great option for any bullet coffee.

Why coconut oil?

You may be wondering, why coconut oil and not another type of oil. Coconut oil has a long list of health benefits. I even use it in my regular, everyday cooking and baking!

It has become popular to use MCT oil instead of regular coconut oil in some versions of Bulletproof coffee.

“MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride, a compound that is made up of medium-chain fatty acids, fat molecules that have between six and 12 carbon molecules. Most fats in the animals or plants that we eat are made up of long-chain triglycerides (or LCTs), which have more than 12 carbon molecules. LCT fats include those found in meat, fish, avocados, nuts, seeds and soybean oil. After consistently drinking Bulletproof coffee using the simple keto coffee recipe of butter and coconut oil mentioned above I replaced the coconut oil with an MCT oil and also started to add Collagen Peptides to my bulletproof coffee every morning.

There are many different versions of homemade bulletproof coffee all with varying amounts of fats and calories. Some include nut butters, adding vanilla or other flavors. I like to go with a simple bulletproof coffee recipe.

Personally, I find drinking bulletproof coffee does increase my mental clarity and energy. I do think it helps my metabolism as well, although if I am honest, and I always want to be, I am currently in a midlife mode that is making it difficult for me to lose weight so I am not currently trying to lose weight ( to keep my sanity).

You can use a stick blender or milk frother. If you have no blending device a *shaker bottle or jar may work?

*I have not tried that method so use caution with hot coffee.

Bp coffee recipes are super simple, you only need 3 or 4 ingredients:

  • brewed coffee
  • butter
  • coconut oil (or mct oil or brain octain oil)
  • sweetner of your choice (optional)
  • some people add in a dash of cinnamon or unsweetened cocoa powder for flavor

How to make bulletproof coffee keto .

Bulletproof coffee is also known as keto coffee due to its high (good) fat content and lack of sugar. In addition, coconut oil has no carbs, and butter is a low-carb food.

I have read and researched this recipe. Yummy. I think you have to be very active and exercise to burn the fat. I know in other countries, it is popular, but people mainly walk everywhere and move a lot. Something to keep in mind.

It is a meal replacement for sure! Not meant to have a big breakfast with this calorie rich drink! You are right, it is important to keep in mind the calorie and fat count with this coffee drink.

I just read this and immediately decided I wanted to try it so I did! I love it! I normally have to have creamer and can go without sweetener but this is amazing 👏 I used my Cuisinart elec hand blender on high with just brewed black coffee, butter and coconut oil and after a minute in the cup it was frothy and delicious added the cinnamon on top and I'm a happy bulletproof coffee drinker. Just one question.......what's the best coffee to use? I'm one of those happy flavored Hawaiian coffees but I used a breakfast blend for this cup. I don't use Keurig .....I like the old fashioned drip coffee makers.
